Zellers has Linux Netbooks

Printer-friendly version

Zellers is selling a Linux-based Netbook for Christmas. The "Very Personal Computer" from Fidelity Electronics goes for $150 CAD.

It features

  • 2 USB ports,
  • a single SD/SDHC card slot,
  • integrated microphone and speaker,
  • 10/100 wired Ethernet port,
  • Wifi networking,
  • a 7" LCD/TFT screen @ 800 x 480 resolution,
  • lithium battery rated for 2 hours continuous use, and an AC adaptor,
  • 400 MHz 32bit processor,
  • 128Mb RAM, and
  • 4 Gb internal storage

The device weighs 0.7Kg (1.5 lbs) and measures 21.2 cm x 14 cm x 2.5 cm (8.4" x 5.5" x 1")

The system is preloaded with Linux (I'm not certain of the distribution or desktop), and comes with

  • a graphical system settings tool,
  • a graphical Network Management tool (for ethernet and Wifi),
  • a web browser
  • an instant messanger tool,
  • an email client,
  • an office suite (word processor and spreadsheet),
  • multimedia tools (music player, media player, image viewer, audio recorder)
  • a dictionary
  • an ebook reader, and a PDF viewer,
  • a calculator
  • a file manager, and
  • some games

It seems to be a pretty good package for a cheap Linux system.
